My Close Encounter with the Extraterrestrial Highway!

Have you ever dreamt of chasing UFOs and exploring the mysteries of Area 51? I recently embarked on an unforgettable road trip along Nevada’s famous Extraterrestrial Highway, and let me tell you, it was out of this world! Part one of my TravelCon25 border-to-border adventure brought me face-to-face with quirky roadside attractions, stunning desert landscapes, and whispers of government secrets. Buckle up, because this is one journey you won’t want to miss.

Car Camping at Lake Paranagat Wildlife Refuge

My adventure began on Wednesday, March 12th, 2025, with a peaceful night of car camping at Lake Paranagat Wildlife Refuge. Waking up to a crisp 39°F morning, I wasn’t quite ready for breakfast. But the view? Spectacular! Even though the campground was right next to the highway, it was surprisingly quiet. The tranquil lake shimmered in the early morning light.

The best part? Camping was free! The host was incredibly welcoming and quickly found me a perfect spot. If you’re looking for a serene and budget-friendly overnight stop, I highly recommend Lake Paranagat Wildlife Refuge.

Hitting the Extraterrestrial Highway

With the sun rising higher, it was time to hit the road. My destination: Rachel, Nevada, the closest town to Area 51. I was excited to explore the legendary Extraterrestrial Highway and see what mysteries it held.

Would I dare to drive up to Area 51 itself? I wasn’t sure. The signs warn of armed guards and the potential for being shot on sight. It’s not like you see anything anyway, right? But the allure of the unknown was too strong to resist.

Alien Jerky and Desert Delights

The Extraterrestrial Highway is more than just a road; it’s an experience. My first stop was the famous Alien Jerky stand. This place is a roadside attraction like no other! They have all sorts of photo spots, including crashed alien ships and even a Trump alien fortune-telling machine. How could I resist?

For just a dollar, I got my fortune told by an extraterrestrial version of the former president. What did it say? I’ll never tell! I also picked up some souvenirs for my son Cian. He got an alien plushy with a hoodie (to match the one he got in Roswell) and an Area 51 hat. Of course, I had to snap a few pictures by the ominous “no access” sign.

Back on the road, the scenery was breathtaking. The vast desert stretched out before me, painted in hues of orange and red. And the road itself? Surprisingly smooth! It was one of the smoothest highways I’ve ever driven on. You almost didn’t even hear any road noise. Beautiful stunning panoramic desert views, lots of Joshua trees, and rocky landscapes. Portions of the highway were so smooth no highway sounds, its like a high-tech pavement engineering feat. Drove past a bunch of cows on the side of the road sniffing a dead cow that was hit by a truck.

Breakfast in Rachel and a Warning About Area 51

Finally, I arrived in Rachel, a small town with a big reputation. I was hoping to find a hearty breakfast to fuel my explorations. I stopped at the local diner/motel called “Ale-Inn” and ordered two eggs, home fries (hash browns), an English muffin, and sausage links. The total came to $13. Not bad for a remote location! The diner also had an interesting gift shop, filled with alien-themed trinkets and souvenirs.

While I was eating, I overheard a conversation that caught my attention. A man was asking the hotel staff about room availability and directions to Area 51. The hotel employee told him it was about 25 miles south of the highway. Then, one of the other patrons chimed in with a warning. He said, “If you want to save yourself $1,000, be wary of the perimeter. Don’t go anywhere near it, or you’ll wind up getting fined. They take that very seriously.”

The man’s response? “Well, they’ll get to know me.” It sounded like he was determined to test the limits, despite the risks.

What’s Next on the Extraterrestrial Highway?

My adventure on the Extraterrestrial Highway was just beginning. From quirky roadside attractions to stunning desert vistas and ominous warnings about Area 51, it was already a trip to remember. However, I terminated the trip at Rachel, returning to Alamo as I’m on a timeline to Tucson for Travel Con.

I drove by Ash Springs which is now permanently closed and fortified so no one can climb the fence as in 2023 a brain-eating amoeba killed a small child who bathed in the hotspring. So Ash Springs / Crystal Springs no longer has publicly accessible hot springs. The Amoeba warning is on the fence.

The journey from Ash Springs, Nevada to Kingman, Arizona was a bit long and boring, outside of Hoover Dam. However dramatic desert views meet the nostalgic pull of historic Route 66 in this locale. Along the way, there’s a mix of rugged landscapes, quirky small towns, and plenty of opportunities to step back in time.

Drove back from Rachel to Ash Springs then headed south towards Las Vegas. Got gas in Alamo, then a long boring desert road trip to civilization. No interest in stopping off at Vegas, the city from the interstate looked run-down, and homeless issues were worse than I remember. It’s all about money there, sucking your resources, crime, pollution, and ick. I might visit on the way back for a show or to visit a client, but otherwise, pretty done with Big Cities these days. More interest in the country, small towns, rural areas, and wilderness.

You can even get out, park, and walk along the Michael O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge to take in a panoramic view of the dam and surrounding desert. As I’ve done these adventures in the past, I breezed through the area on this trip, but its worth checking out and stopping if you haven’t been!

Crossed over Hoover Dam. Stopped by the overlook, the wind was so strong, almost lost my phone out of my hand and down off the cliff. Skipped the touristy stuff and headed to Kingman. Finally in Arizona, not much warmer than Nevada, high 40’s. disappointing. Made it to Kingman and settled into my IHG rewards-free night stay at the Holiday Inn Express. Took a swim in the massive pool. It was “heated” but not enough. Retired to a bowl of Chili with fritos for dinner. Then played Roblox Strongest Battlefield with my son over the phone, worked on blogs, and called it a night.

As I’m on a tight road trip schedule for the trip down to Tucson, I did not take the time out to explore Route 66 this time. I have many times in the past, so its well worth exploring if you have the time. Exploring the stretch of Route 66 in and beyond Kingman, Arizona, is like stepping into a nostalgic postcard.
