I spied a billboard for this attraction off the highway and, thinking it was just off the exit, turned into a good half-hour drive side-cutting down one-laned double traffic direction country lanes. I googled it, and it sounded fantastic. As a big Lord of the Rings fan, I was excited. Unfortunately, it was morning, so I hoped it was open for breakfast and tea. It was. Parking was tricky, so I had to grab a parking garage. I walked down the road to the pub/hostel and realized it was no longer a hostel but just a cafe and bar. I had hoped to check into staying there, but that is no longer an option.

The Shire is a “Lord of the Rings” themed bar/pub and tea-house in the town center of Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. However quaint the tea shop was, it was bland with any Lord of the Rings decor. All that artistry was up in the pub. The pub was closed for the morning, but they let me up to take a gander. The breakfast was good, and I had a salmon benedict, orange juice, and a cup of tea. It was more of order at the counter seat yourself; they did come by the table once, kind of joint. A little slow. I had hoped to figure out an evening to go check out the nighttime venue, but it wasn’t at my convenience where I was staying, distance, hours, etc. For the future, I hope. The pub has a wide range of specialty-brewed beers, wines, spirits, and cocktails. They also state the bar is dog/pet friendly and a live music / open trad sessions entertainment venue.

Breakfast rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars. 12/19/2023.
